change your story

"The only time we suffer is when we believe

a thought that argues with what is."

Byron Katie

Have you ever been in a situation where you

were upset and angry? Now think about that

and answer this question: Why were you

upset?

Be careful with your answer. When you look

at it closely, you'll find that it boils down to

some version of this: someone or something

was a certain way and they should have been

a different way.

Now think about this very carefully. When you

say that someone or something should have

been a different way, you're arguing with reality.

The facts are - it is the way it is. Are you

changing it by being upset? No, you're just

making yourself suffer. You're arguing with

what is.

Your belief that it should have been different

is just a thought. That's all it is. It's the story

you're telling about the situation, and it's not

helping you deal with it, it's just causing you

to suffer.

Would you like to stop suffering? Careful now,

because for some people the honest answer

is No. That's their story about their life.

But if your honest answer is Yes, then here's

the way to end your suffering. Change your

story!

Your new story is simply that it is the way it

is, with no value judgments. Then deal with

it from there.

You're going to have to deal with it anyway,

why not do it in a way that eliminates your

suffering?

Change your story and expect miracles!
